THE
GOOD SHEPHERD EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM
AGES SIX WEEKS TO FIVE YEARS

At Good Shepherd we encourage preschool children to learn and develop
through experiences in the following areas.
Daily Living & Dramatic Play: Activities aimed at
development of concentration, coordination, independence and order.
Sensorial: Activities for satisfying a child's need for
order, precision, touch, motor control, and repetition.
Mathematics: Allows the child to gain a true insight
into sequence, space, shape and form.
Language: A unique blend of phonics and whole language,
which encourages the development of vocabulary and leads gradually to
writing and reading.
Art: Activities which develop a childís creativity
and an understanding and appreciation of color, form, and design.
Geography: Activities which foster an understanding of
our environment, both personal and universal.
Science: Activities which enhance a childís
appreciation of all that nature has to offer.
Music: Activities which encourage the development of
listening skills, coordination, and an appreciation of different types
of music and their composers.
Spanish: An emersion based program where the children
are taught the basic structure of the Spanish language through conversation
and music.
INFANTS
The Good Shepherd Day School infant program is designed with specific
goals and objectives. Our goals are to provide a safe, comforting, healthy
environment for infants. The program provides a developmentally appropriate
environment that challenges and stimulates each infant. We provide play
experiences that help infants to explore, discover, and learn about their
world. We also expose infants to frequent positive language interactions
which result in the developeent of receptive, and later, expressive language.
TODDLERS & TWOS
The Good Shepherd Preschool meets the special needs of toddlers and twos
by offering an environment that provides security and encourages growth.
Our exciting activities help your toddlers emerge from babyhood to the
wonders of childhood. Our program provides an interactive setting in which
language skills expand rapidly. It is based on Piaget's theory of development
which is sensorimotor based.
PRESCHOOL FOR THREE YEAR OLD CHILDREN
The Good Shepherd Preschool Program offers an integrated curriculum to
foster the childrenís love of learning and feelings of success.
Our supportive environment encourages curiosity and creative thinking.
Through a variety of activities, we support a childís intellectual,
social, emotional, spiritual, and physical growth. The children work and
learn in a print-rich environment that expands their interest in printed
language. There are many storytelling activities that foster a beginning
love of reading. Dramatic play activities help preschool children to experiment
with different roles and to make sense of their world. Small group activities
help preschool children develop social skills.
Three year old children at Good Shepherd participate in music and movement
experiences that expand creativity and interest in sound and rhythm.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN
The Good Shepherd Pre-Kindergarten Program encourages a four-year-old's
budding interest in reading and working. Our program combines a whole
language curriculum with phonics through playful learning experiences
for children. We implement listening and speaking activities that build
a childís vocabulary and encourage them to use words to express
their own thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Writing with scribbles and drawing
activities help reinforce that the printed word has meaning and that the
childís own ìscribblesî tell a story. Our children
are engaged in book publishing, writing journals, and field trips to the
library to build early literacy. Math manipulatives provide the children
with opportunities to compare, sort, and sequence, while hands-on science
activities encourage the child's curiosity.
